Why professional sharpening matters for hairdressing scissors

If you’re a barber or hairdresser, you already know that you scissors are your most important tool. Professional hairdressing scissor sharpening keeps your work easier, reduces strain on your hands, and helps you deliver the best possible finish for your clients. When scissors lose their edge, even a great cut can become harder work than it needs to be.

At Mr Knife Guy, hairdressing scissor sharpening is what we specialise in. This guide explains why scissors become dull, how to tell when yours need sharpening, and why professional sharpening is the safest way to protect your tools.

Why Hairdressing Scissors Lose Their Edge

Even the highest quality hairdressing and barbering scissors will eventually need sharpening. Every cut causes microscopic wear along the blade, even when the scissors are made from high grade steel. Over time, this wear builds up and affects cutting performance.

Environmental factors also play a role. Humidity, moisture, and exposure to chemicals such as bleach and hair products can all impact the blade edge. Poor storage, accidental drops, or using scissors for anything other than cutting hair can cause immediate damage that you’ll notice straight away.

Signs Your Hairdressing Scissors Need Sharpening

Common signs your hairdressing scissors need sharpening include

  • Hair folding or bending instead of cutting cleanly
  • Needing more pressure to make a cut
  • Hand or wrist pain during or after cutting
  • Scissor blades snagging or pulling the hair
  • Increased noise when closing the scissors
  • Scissors feeling less precise or controlled

If you notice any of these issues, it’s time to have your scissors checked. Sharpening them early helps prevent more serious damage and keeps them working as they should. You can read more about how to tell when your scissors need sharpening in our guide.

Why Expert Sharpening Makes a Difference

Sharpening hairdressing scissors correctly takes experience, specialist equipment, and a steady hand. DIY sharpening often causes more harm than good and can permanently damage the blades. We regularly see scissors that can’t be repaired because they have been sharpened using unsuitable tools.

Using a honing rod designed for kitchen knives, or running your scissor’s edge over sandpaper, for example, can ruin the cutting edge and shorten the lifespan of hairdressing scissors significantly.

A professional hairdressing scissor sharpening service protects your investment and ensures your scissors perform as they’re meant to.

Our Hairdressing Scissor Sharpening Service

At Mr Knife Guy, we know how to look after professional hairdressing scissors properly. Our scissor sharpening service is designed to restore performance while protecting the structure of the blades.

Each pair of scissors is carefully examined, then fully stripped down before being sharpened and honed by hand. Any worn or damaged parts are replaced before reassembly. We then check tension and alignment and test the scissors thoroughly to ensure they are cutting smoothly and accurately before they’re returned to you.

How Regular Scissor Sharpening Protects Your Work

Sharp scissors make your job easier and your clients happier. Regular care, combined with professional hairdressing scissor sharpening when needed, helps extend the life of your scissors and keeps your work consistent and comfortable day after day.

If your scissors aren’t cutting as they should, professional sharpening can make an immediate difference. We provide expert hairdressing scissor sharpening for barbers and hairdressers, with careful inspection, hand sharpening, and full setup included.

Signs your hairdressing scissors need sharpening

For most hairdressers and barbers, your scissors are your most important piece of kit. But even the best sidekicks need a little TLC from time to time. When they’re sharp, cutting feels smooth and controlled. When they’re not, your work can suffer.

If your trusty scissors have been feeling a little… off lately, they might be trying to tell you something. At Mr Knife Guy, we know what a sharp pair of scissors should feel like, and more importantly, what they shouldn’t feel like. So here are a few telltale signs that your scissors are due for a professional sharpening – because dull scissors and great hair don’t mix.

  1. You’re Finding Cutting Tricky

This is an obvious one; if your scissors are no longer gliding through hair like butter and instead feel more like they’re chewing through it, it’s a red flag. Tugging, pulling, folding, snagging, or needing to go over the same section twice? That’s not your technique – it’s your scissors begging for a sharpen.

Not only does a dull blade slow you down, but it’s also not great for the hair. Blunt scissors can cause split ends and uneven textures, and of course this reflects back onto you as a stylist. Keep your scissors sharp is the key to providing the best experience for your clients.

  1. They’re Looking a Little Rough Around the Edges

Grab your scissors and give them a little once-over. Do you see any nicks, dents, or dull edges? If you can spot wear and tear with the naked eye, chances are your scissors are well past their sharpening date.

A bit of visible damage might not seem like a big deal, but it messes with your precision and could end up damaging the hair. It sounds a bit dramatic, but it’s true. Regular check-ins with your blades is essential, and getting your scissors sharpened regularly allows them – and you – to continue performing at your best.

  1. Your Hands Are Tired… Like, All the Time

If you’re finding yourself finishing the day with sore fingers or aching wrists, your scissors may well be the culprit. Dull blades require more effort as more force is required to cut through the hair, and this can put unnecessary strain on your hands and wrists.

Using sharp scissors makes cutting feel effortless. When your scissors aren’t sharp, not only does it affect your work, but it can also lead to long-term discomfort and injury.

  1. There’s a Change in Sound or Feel

Have you noticed a subtle grinding sound while you’re cutting? Or are your blades resisting or feeling a bit ‘heavy’? That’s your scissors sending out a wee SOS, begging for a tune-up. The change might be minor, but any deviation from the norm is a sign that they might need some love and attention.

You know how your tools are supposed to feel. When they start acting up, don’t ignore it.

  1. You Can’t Remember When Your Scissors Were Last Sharpened

If you’re racking your brain and still drawing a blank on the last time your scissors got a proper sharpen, that’s probably your answer right there.

How often your particular pair of scissors will need sharpening really depends – on how many cuts you’re doing, what kind of hair you’re working with, and how well you’re looking after them day to day. (Are they being cleaned, oiled, and stored properly, or are they rolling around loose in a drawer with some bobby pins and a rogue hair clip?)

The thing is, scissors usually go dull gradually. Unless you’ve dropped them, you probably won’t notice a sudden change in your scissors’ performance. Lots of the signs that your scissors need sharpening happen gradually and before you know it, you’ve adjusted your technique to compensate without even realising it.

So, if your blades feel fine but not fabulous, and it’s been a while since their last sharpening – then yep, it’s probably time to book us in for a sharpen. If you’re tempted to have a go yourself with a piece of tinfoil or some sandpaper, you can read why that’s not the best idea in our guide to why professional sharpening matters, here.

Give us a ring and we’ll come out to you. We cover a large splodge of the North West with our mobile sharpening service, and if you’re based outside of our catchment area, we also offer a quick and simple postal service for scissor sharpening.

If you’d like to learn more about our sharpening process, you’ll find that on our Scissor Sharpening page. And if you’re read to book your appointment, please give us a quick ring on 01706 489481 or 07341 304221.

Why scissor rental makes sense for hairdressers

Scissor rental for hairdressers, barbers and dog groomers is a practical alternative to buying expensive professional scissors outright. A good pair can cost hundreds of pounds, and that’s before you factor in sharpening, servicing, repairs, and eventual replacement. For many stylists, that upfront cost is the biggest barrier to working with the scissors they actually want to use.

That’s where scissor rental comes in. It gives you access to high-quality professional scissors, without the large initial spend, and without the ongoing maintenance worries.

So what is scissor rental?

Scissor rental is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of buying your scissors outright, you rent them for a fixed monthly fee. You use professional hairdressing scissors every day, but you never have to think about sharpening, repairs, or replacements. We take care of all of that for you.

Your focus stays on your clients. We keep your scissors performing as they should.

Why rent hairdressing scissors?

The biggest reason is cost. High-end scissors can easily cost £300 to £800 per pair, and most stylists need more than one. Renting removes that large upfront payment and spreads the cost into a manageable monthly amount. That predictable monthly cost appeals to trainees, freelancers, mobile hairdressers, and experienced stylists working in busy or high-end salons alike. Many professionals choose rental simply because it keeps cash flow steady while ensuring they are always working with well-maintained, professional tools.

Rental also gives you flexibility. Hands change, cutting styles evolve, and what felt right a year ago might not feel right now. Renting lets you try different sizes and styles without being stuck with an expensive pair that no longer suits you.

Scissor rental is especially popular with trainees, and it’s a service you won’t find anywhere else. Mr Knife Guy is the only UK company currently offering dedicated scissor rental for hairdressers, and we already support hundreds of happy clients across the region. When you’re just starting out, spending hundreds of pounds on scissors rarely makes sense. Your technique is developing, your confidence is growing, and what feels comfortable now may not suit you in six months’ time. Scissor rental lets you work with professional scissors from day one, without tying up money you may not have. You can try different sizes and styles as your skills improve, and you never have to worry about sharpening costs or accidental damage while you’re learning. It keeps your setup professional, affordable, and flexible while you focus on building your career.

Maintenance is fully covered

Keeping scissors sharp takes time and money. With scissor rental, you don’t pay extra for sharpening or repairs. We include professional sharpening as often as you need it, and we handle any repair work needed to keep your scissors in top condition.

We can sharpen in our mobile workshop, or if we can’t get out to you immediately, by post using a prepaid envelope we provide. Turnaround is quick, so you’re not left without working scissors.

What if they get damaged?

Scissors get dropped. They get knocked off stations. Accidents happen. With rental, that’s not a problem. If your scissors are damaged, we repair or replace them straight away at no extra cost. You’re never left worrying about the cost of an accident or a mistake. With scissor rental for hairdressers, maintenance and repairs are always covered. We professionally maintain all rental scissors through our in-house scissor sharpening service.

New scissors every year

Every 12 months, you receive a brand-new pair of scissors. You can stick with the same model you are comfortable with, or switch to something different. Many stylists use this as a chance to refine their setup as their skills and preferences develop.

A range to suit every stylist

We carry a wide range of professional hairdressing scissors. That includes regular hairdressing and barbering scissors, thinners, left-handed models, larger handle options, and precision scissors for detailed work. When we visit, you can try several pairs and see what actually feels right in your hand, rather than guessing online.

How scissor rental works

Getting started is simple. You book an appointment and we come out to you. You try different scissors, choose the ones that suit you, and we set up the rental. You make a single upfront payment, followed by a monthly Direct Debit.

There are no credit checks, and you can end the rental at any time.

Scissor rental prices

Rental starts at £25 upfront for one pair, then £16.99 per month per pair. That price includes sharpening, repairs, replacements, and postage. There are no hidden fees. Scissor rental for hairdressers removes the pressure of large upfront costs.

If you run a salon, we also offer tailored rental packages for teams.

Try scissor rental with Mr Knife Guy

How often do hairdressing scissors need sharpening?

When it comes to hairdressing and barbering, sharp scissors aren’t just a nice thing to have – they’re essential. From trims to texturizing, your scissors are doing all the heavy lifting. And if they’re not in top shape, neither is your work. At Mr Knife Guy, we understand how important your scissors are, so here’s a quick guide to how often you should be having your scissors sharpened.

Spotting the Signs of Dull Scissors

Being able to tell when your scissors need sharpening is one of those behind-the-scenes skills every barber and stylist should have. Dull scissors can and do impact the quality of your work, and they can also cause lasting strain on your hands and wrists. If you feel like your scissors need some attention, they probably do.

Instead of a smooth cut, you might find your scissors are folding or snagging the hair. Sometimes it can get so noticeable that your client might even feel it. You might find yourself having to adjust your technique to make up for your scissor’s poor performance, or maybe they’ve started to feel a bit ‘gritty’ as you cut. Additionally, if your scissors have started to make a grinding or crunchy sound, this is another sign that they need to be looked at. You can read more about how to tell when your scissors need sharpening here.

Sooooo, How Often Do Scissors Need Sharpening Then?

This is one of those ‘how long is a piece of string’ kinda questions, as it really does depend on a few different factors. Having said that, as a super rough guide, we’d suggest a full service and sharpening at least every six months… but this can and does vary hugely depending on usage. High volume barbers and stylists may well find they need to call us out a more often, while those who make sure they’re really looking after their blades (keeping them clean, keeping them stored properly and keeping them oiled regularly) might be able to go a little longer between appointments.

Keeping Your Scissors Sharper for Longer

A few simple habits can go a long way in keeping your scissors at their best. Clean them between every use, make sure they’re completely dry before storing them, and keep them in a proper scissor case – not rattling round in the bottom of a drawer. Using them for anything other than human hair is the biggest faux pas we see; don’t use them for cutting foils, or boxes or even paper. If might seem harmless but it’s very easy to misalign and dull the blades. Proper care of your scissors can mean you’re able to go longer between sharpening appointments.

Let The Experts Handle It

We’ve all seen the videos where you use tinfoil or a honing rod to give your scissors a little top-up between sharpenings. What you don’t see are the panicked messages we get on a weekly basis from barbers and stylists who have rendered their scissors next to useless by believing this stuff. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – if sharpening scissors really was as easy as the videos suggest, we’d be out of a job. Professional sharpening and servicing is the only way to make sure your scissors don’t end up being the most expensive piece of kit you can’t use.

At Mr Knife Guy, we make it really easy. If you’re within our catchment area for our mobile sharpening service, we’ll come out to you and get your scissors expertly sharpened on the spot. We’ll give them a full MOT while we’re at it, replacing any worn or damaged parts on the way. And if you live a little further afield, we offer the same VIP sharpening treatment for your scissors with our postal sharpening service.

Think your scissors could be due for a sharpen? Drop us a message or give us a quick ring on 01706 489481 or 07341 304221, and we’ll get them sorted for you.

How Can You Keep Your Hairdressing Scissors Performing At Their Best?

A good pair of well-maintained hairdressing scissors is an essential bit of kit for every barber and stylist. But how can you look after your scissors to keep them performing at their best between sharpening appointments?

Store Them Safely

The easiest and most important way to look after your blades is to make sure they’re stored carefully and safely between uses. We recommend keeping them in a scissor pot or a case (and if you’re a rental customer, we’re more than happy to provide you with either or both, free of charge!)  Safely stored scissors are a lot less likely to get dropped or damaged, which means a lot less heartache and stress for you.

Keep them clean

Lots of the hair products that are used in barbers and hair salons contain ingredients that aren’t water soluble. When they’ve been used before or during a cut, scissors can pick up a thin film of this residue which then sits along the surface of the blade. This barely-visible film can cause problems in a couple of ways; firstly, it impacts how well the scissors cut, and it can also cause the scissors to get blunt more quickly.

Your scissors will absolutely need regular cleaning, and we provide our rental customers with a specially formulated spray to do this. Keeping your scissors in solutions like Barbicide can and does cause damage. We regularly see scissors that are suffering because they’ve been stored in liquid disinfectant, and this is something we never recommend. All you need is a quick spray of our scissor cleaner before wiping off any excess with a clean tissue, and your scissors will be clean and sanitised without any damage. We recommend you do this whenever you have a chance; between each client ideally, but daily as a minimum.

Oil Your Scissors

We also recommend using our scissor oil at the end of each day. Scissors that are clean and oiled cut better, and also tend to last longer between sharpenings. Open your scissors up, and pop a drop of oil onto the joint to ensure they move freely and easily. Any grime, dirt of hair caught between the hinge will ease free. It’s important to use specially formulated scissor oil (again, we’re happy to supply our rental customers with bottles of this for free!) as even clipper blade oil can cause problems for hairdressing scissors. Need more oil? Just give us a shout!

Only Use Your Scissors On Hair

It’s also super important that you don’t use your scissors for cutting anything other than hair. Even snipping off a piece of Sellotape with them can cause problems, as you’ll get a sticky residue along your blade and your scissors won’t cut because of this. Hairdressing scissors are a lot more temperamental than you might expect, and using them to cut wrapping paper or plastic clothing tags can cause real issues. If it’s not hair, don’t cut it! Hairdressing scissors are precise little things, and they don’t forgive you easily.

Call Us Out As Soon As You Need Us

Lastly, don’t try to plough through with scissors that don’t feel right. If there’s a problem, your scissors aren’t going to rectify it themselves – leaving it will only make it worse. Give us a call as soon as you feel like your scissors might need some attention and we’ll get them back to their best straight away. We’ve written a quick guide on how to tell when your hairdressing scissors need sharpening, here.

The sooner we take a look, the quicker we can get them back in top condition and save you from potentially bigger issues down the line.
